YI regional by-elections called for Scotland and the Eastern Counties

We have two of the Young Independence Regional Chairmen standing down today to focus on other roles they are doing within UKIP. They are Joe Jenkins as YI Scotland Chairman and Dan Jukes as YI Eastern Chairman.

The nominations open today and will close next week at midday on Wednesday 4th February. The voting will start Wednesday evening and run until 5pm on Friday 6th with results announced shortly after. The returning officer will be YI Chairman Jack Duffin.

To stand you must have been a member of UKIP for at least a year, live in the relevant region and be aged 30 or under. To nominate yourself, email jack@ukip.org with a proposer, seconder and three assentors as well as one side of A4 as a manifesto. All 5 must be YI members with the proposer, seconder and an assenter living in the region. Only members within the respective region will be able to vote.

The role of a Regional Chairperson is to attend the monthly National Council meetings, hold a bi-monthly meeting with the County Chairperson in your region, inviting the Regional Organiser and UKIP Regional Chairperson . Attend the Regional UKIP meetings as a non-voting member. Make sure there is an action day taking part in some part of the region every week, these can be organised by the County Chairman or Branch Representatives but means YI have an opportunity to campaign. Make sure there is at least one regional YI event each month as well as host the monthly training day within their region.

Outgoing Scotland Chairman Joe Jenkins said “My time as YI Scotland Chairman has been a fantastic period, and I have greatly enjoyed working with all the different people I have met and got to know over this period. However in light of my recent selection as PPC for Sheffield Hallam and the increasing time and pressure UKIP Students is taking up, I no longer feel it is appropriate to continue the role and therefore announce my resignation.

“I would like to again express my gratitude to the members of Scotland, and hope that I will be able to see as many of you as possible help me in my campaign against Nick Clegg.”

Outgoing Eastern Chairman Dan Jukes said “With the general election approaching and a great chance to win a UKIP MP in Thurrock, I have reluctantly decided to step down from my region role within Young Independence.

“It has been encouraging to see the huge rise in YI over the last 12 months, with my personal highlights being the YI conference in Birmingham and seeing so many of you campaign in Clacton and Rochester to win our first MPs. I look forward to seeing YI councillors being elected in May, and who knows – perhaps one or two YI MPs.”

YI Chairman Jack Duffin said “Joe and Dan have been key figures in what we have achieved with YI in the last 11 months. I would like to thanks them for all they have done. I look forward to working closely with Joe as UKIP Students Officer and Dan Jukes during the campaign to get YI member Tim Aker elected in Thurrock.”

The next set of YI elections will take place in July 2015, where we will be electing the national team, the entire set of Regional and County Chairpersons before the 2015 YI Conference.
