Young Independence Elects Youngest Ever Chairman & Deputy
Yesterday, at 5:34pm, the results of the election of the new Chairman and Deputy Chairman of Young Independence (YI), UKIP’s Youth Wing, were announced. It was a very close result, with 35 votes for Nathan and Reece against 34 for their opponents, Will Donnelly and Jonathan Wood. Both Nathan and Reece are the youngest people to have ever filled their respective positions.
Nathan Ryding, 19, is the Chairman of UKIP’s Wigan Branch, and was the party’s General Election candidate in the Wigan Constituency in 2017, receiving 5.8% of the vote, over three times UKIP’s average result. He was formerly the YI North West Regional Chairman and the YI Events Officer. Nathan was a soldier for a year before going back to education and studying Public Services Level 3 at Wigan and Leigh College.
Reece Coombes, 16, is the Owner and Founder of kippercentral.com, a UKIP-supporting community blog which has a readership of several thousand viewers each day, which he founded at just 14 years old. Reece is a previous YI South West Regional Chairman and present committee member of the UKIP Weston-super-Mare branch, a position to which he was elected unopposed in February and again in November. Reece is studying A Levels at Weston College, in Weston-super-Mare.
In their victory statement, they said: “We are extremely proud and honoured to have been elected as the Chairman and Deputy Chairman of Young Independence this week and we are very excited for the next year, in which time we will revive our marvellous youth wing!
“As you know, the result was very close and it is important to us that we interpret our mandate accordingly. Tensions have been very high in YI these last few weeks, and we understand that many people have said things which they regret. We will put this behind us and work with them in whatever way we best can. Over the next few days, we will be talking to Jonathan, Will and their supporters about how we can use their skills, ideas and expertise as part of our mission to revive YI.
“This next year will give YI the motivation, the inspiration and the vision that we have been lacking for too long. We are desperately excited to give each and every member of our movement the opportunity to play their part in this radical change.”
Over the next few weeks, YI will elect its new Executive and National Councils, according to a timetable to be released shortly by Nathan and Reece. In the meantime, they have kept Jonathan Wood (their opponent for the position of Chairman) on as Interim Treasurer and have appointed George Pykov as Interim Secretary.
